Blondes, four shades of fair hung side by side

Cindy wears her blonde long and waved, with blue eyes that suit the cooler shade. She lives in Chelsea, keeps a camera within reach and likes bookings that begin early, while there is still light worth pointing out over the river.

Nancy is golden blonde, also blue eyed, and the one member of this grouping in her thirties. Swimming, sushi counters and long coast roads fill her own time. With guests she is sunny and straightforward, and she would happily time dinner so the sun sets during the first glass.

Nora has hair the colour of honey, hazel eyes and an athletic build. Fresh flowers every morning, sketched designs for clothes and a glass of champagne at the golden hour are her habits, and she treats a hotel bar in early evening as the ideal first room.

Thea is caramel blonde and green eyed, and the only one of the four who lives in South Kensington itself. Japanese food and long walks with no phone signal are her subjects, and she brings the same unfussy warmth to a quiet hotel evening.

If an evening starts before dark, Cindy and Nora suit it best: the first will suggest the Chelsea Embankment or a gallery, the second a window seat on Sloane Street. Nancy is the natural choice for a restaurant with a long view, such as Min Jiang, high above Kensington Gardens. Thea is the simplest arrangement for a relaxed dinner near the museums, and a good one for guests who would rather talk about a mountain path than a wine list.

Two of the four travel for pleasure more than most. Cindy sails whenever a friend has a spare berth and Nancy plans next summer's drive over weekend breakfasts, which makes both easy company for a long weekend in and around west London.
