About Karolina

Curator's notes
  • Slim and tall at 174 cm
  • Brown eyes; black hair, straight and long
  • Late twenties, poised and discreet
  • Piano, opera, architecture walks
  • Lives in Covent Garden

The stucco villas of Holland Park were built for people who entertained seriously, and Karolina reads them the way a pianist reads a score: proportion first, ornament later. She is twenty-seven and slim, 174 cm in flat shoes, brown-eyed, her black hair perfectly straight and worn long, and she carries her height the way those facades carry their columns, upright and without apology. Covent Garden is where she lives; the west is where she likes to walk.

Ask her for an evening and she will offer two versions. In summer it is Opera Holland Park, the canopied theatre among the trees, with a picnic beforehand if the weather holds. The rest of the year she prefers a recital at Cadogan Hall on Sloane Terrace, where a piano sounds its best in a room that began life as a church, followed by supper nearby and a taxi back to your hotel in Kensington or Chelsea.

Poise is the word guests reach for, discretion the quality they value. Karolina says very little about herself at first and a great deal about the building you are standing in, which is its own kind of charm. Her wit is dry and tends to arrive late in a sentence. She plays piano every day she can, speaks English with careful precision, and would rather hear one excellent aria than sit through an average evening of them. Nothing about her is hurried, least of all her attention.

She is booked often for Holland Park and the W8 side of Kensington. The full ladder of durations sits on the rates page, and one message is enough to begin.

An evening with Karolina

Karolina's ideal evening has an interval. It begins at six with a short architecture walk along Melbury Road, past the red brick studio houses built for Victorian painters, with a pause outside Leighton House while she explains what waits inside. She talks about who built what and for whom, briefly and well, then hails a taxi to Sloane Terrace in good time for the first half.

At the interval she takes a glass of something dry and forms an opinion on the pianist's left hand. After the concert comes supper within walking distance, then your hotel, where she slips off her heels, asks what you made of the second half and actually listens to the answer. She leaves precisely when agreed, as a good performance should.

Three questions · 03

In Karolina's words

Leighton House. Outside it is a sensible brick house, then you step in and find a golden tiled hall with a fountain. I admire anything that surprises you politely.

Most mornings, for an hour. Scales first. Nobody believes me about the scales.

Then we skip it. A good dinner and a long walk are also a kind of music.
